Toni Stone Innovative Initiative Award

About the Award

The Toni Stone award honors an individual from a CTCNet Member center who has made special contributions to their community. The award honors demonstrated innovation and impact on people's lives. First established in 1996 as the Innovative Initiative award, it was renamed in honor of Antonia "Toni" Stone's honor, when she passed in 2002.

Toni Stone has been characterized as the first person to take action against what became known known as the "digital divide." Her vision of the need to provide equal access to technology is widely recognized. As Toni Stone said, "It is the people, not the technology," and this award exemplifies that philosophy.

"Toni Stone had a powerful impact on my life, and on many, many others. Her values and vision lives on in the thousands of emerging CTCs across our country and the world. She was also a friend who radiated personal warmth even when times were difficult for her health wise. Each day, when we see someone's face brighten when they learn something new, we'll see that part of Toni is still with us...."
